WASECA, MINN. — County staff have received a number of complaints regarding the strong odors being emitted from the Birds Eye wastewater treatment facility located south of the City of Waseca at 34529 128th Street. Waseca County Planning & Zoning staff have been in contact with Birds Eye officials, inquiring about the odor issue and how it may be mitigated.
Clark Minks, Birds Eye Environmental Supervisor, provided the following statement, proving Birds Eye’s diligence in addressing the issue.
“Throughout the year the team at Birds Eye have been putting a very strong focus on fixing this [odor] problem and have reached out to many outside vendors for ideas and countermeasures. On this Thursday (8/10/17), we [Birds Eye] are doing a Hydrogen Peroxide treatment to our North Cell [pond]. This will be an approximately 8 million gallon treatment conducted by a chemical company called Hawkins. This treatment has already been approved by the MPCA [Minnesota Pollution Control Agency] to be done. So far, this treatment approach looks to be the best method we can do. Also, we are currently in the process of getting approval from the MPCA for another deodorizing chemical. A conference call is happening this week to discuss this chemical with the MPCA. Again, this is a strong focus of ours and we believe we are moving in the right direction.” – Clark Minks, Environmental Supervisor, Birds Eye Foods
Waseca County is aware of the public concern regarding the odor issue. We ask for your patience as this matter is addressed. The investment by Birds Eye Foods in our community is greatly appreciated and we look forward to the issue being resolved in the near future.
